| The
present Birmingham Course grew from exercises developed over many
years by the late John Lorimer for teaching braille to the sighted
teachers studying at the University of Birmingham to become qualified
teachers of blind children. This course has been successfully used
for a number of years in the training of teachers of the visually
impaired, rehabilitation workers, social workers, learning support
assistants and parents.
The
Workbook is the core of
the system, introducing the learner to the braille code and providing
writing and reading exercises to test the learner's grasp of the
rules of fully contracted, Standard English Braille.
The Rulebook
lists all the braille symbols and explains the rules governing their
use. It is therefore a valuable reference tool for the learner,
as well as the experienced teacher wanting to check the accuracy
of their understanding of the complexities and nuanes of the code
